What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. Today, Juneteenth is recognized as a federal holiday and serves as a time to celebrate freedom, honor Black history and culture, and gather in community.
